2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their popularity has seemingly increased in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are serious Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat apparent elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely strong.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs offer inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year so far.

Should these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
