Boston's Leader Mayor Wu Counters Trump's Threat to Relocate FIFA World Cup Games from City

The mayor of Boston, Mayor Wu, suggested that the municipality was ready for a face-off with President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup tournament matches from Gillette Stadium, situated 22 miles south-west of the city.

Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast this week to address comments from the White House, which had labeled her as "far-left." President Trump had warned that he would call the head of FIFA if Boston did not "clean up its act."

Much of it is secured by contract so that no one, even if they live in the White House, can undo it.

She continued, "We live in a time where for drama, for control, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are directed at people and cities who stand their ground and submit or follow along to a divisive plan."

She further stated, "We are going to continue being who we are, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting Boston's values." She finished by emphasizing her commitment for the city, declaring, "Ten toes down for Boston."

Trump's Comments and FIFA's Role

Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was photographed with President Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also visited the Oval Office and given World Cup tournament and club championship awards to Trump as gifts.

On Tuesday, President Trump was questioned on recent disturbances in South Boston that involved a police car being burned. He responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the president of FIFA, who's great."

Trump added, "I would say: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He might not prefer it. But he would do it without hesitation." The president also specifically targeted Wu, stating, "Their mayor is not good ... she's radical left, and they're taking over parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"

Previous Threats and Upcoming Tournament Details

Trump has previously suggested that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about moving games from other host cities, which are among the 16 host cities across North America.

The US is joint hosts the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is planned to be held from 11 June to 19 July in the coming year.
