Devastated Hong Kong Inhabitants Shocked as Large-Scale Fire Ravages Housing Complexes

"Getting closer to the area, the heat increases and you can experience it, with the fumes being extremely heavy."

Student Thomas Liu was among the numerous residents attracted to the scene of a deadly fire that engulfed significant parts of the eight-building housing complex in the city's Tai Po district.

At least 36 individuals have lost their lives in Wednesday's destructive fire so far, with many still unaccounted for, leading to expectations that this count will likely grow.

"It's a disaster," Thomas commented about the incident, adding that he had seen a body being removed from the location.

Over a thousand further residents were compelled to evacuate the complex as the flames expanded, with several going to temporary shelters that have been set up to shelter them.

The blaze is gradually being managed, but authorities report they do not know when it will be fully eliminated.

Blazes could be observed coming from specific units as many people looked on in stillness.

"I feel devastated. There are so many friends and community members. I do not know what is going on now. Look, all the homes are just ablaze. I cannot determine what to achieve. I wish the government can support us to find stability after this."

One female resident explained that her neighbors live inside the building and she was remaining to hear if they managed to get out.

An elderly inhabitant, who has dwelled in building number two of the residential estate for over four decades annums, described hearing "an extremely loud sound" and observing blaze erupt in a close building.

"I promptly went inside to collect my things," the elderly inhabitant commented.

"I am uncertain how I feel at this moment. I'm just considering about where I'm going to stay tonight because I likely cannot go re-enter my residence."

While the cause of the inferno that overwhelmed the multiple tall blocks continues to be undetermined, the fire are suspected to have quickly advanced through the bamboo scaffolding that enveloped the structures, which were experiencing refurbishments.

Some people have expressed anger that such a massive blaze could have happened and challenged the reaction.

"When there's a wildfire, they will deploy aircraft and dispense water bombs, but why is there not any response and how can they leave further buildings burning?" questioned one more inhabitant of the complex.

"Our neighborhood is so close to the emergency response center and we thought the inferno could be extinguished soon, but currently the fire has spread. I'm so disheartened," she explained.

The woman noted that she had been given little guidance from the authorities on where to seek help.

Multiple Tai Po inhabitants had brought supplies to the impacted residents - including many of coverings and warming devices.

Upon questioning about their sentiments regarding the tragedy, inhabitants voiced that "authorities is unprepared" and that they were "profoundly distraught".

"We desire not to experience any additional casualties," said a resident.

An elderly lady who lives in an apartment in the affected structures stated she was not at home when the fire broke out but that she is worried about her apartment because it is not insured.

"I'm extremely upset that I have nowhere to return to at present," she added.
