The athlete achieved her personal best of one minute 54.61 seconds last year in London.

The Olympic champion finished her 800m campaign with a triumph at the women-only Athlos meet in New York on Friday night.

{The current Olympic gold medallist, who secured bronze at the World Championships recently, excelled in an impressive victory in one minute 56.53 seconds in what was only her sixth race in a year impacted by a hamstring injury.

Fellow Briton and global silver winner Georgia Hunter Bell took the runner-up spot again in 1:58.33, while St Vincent's Shafiqua M. (one minute 58.57) secured third place.

"I've barely raced this season so it was likely less of a struggle for me to go out there and be motivated to perform," said Hodgkinson.

"The environment at the event is incredible so it was really, really fun."

The women-only meet packed the stadium in its second edition, introducing a party atmosphere to conventional athletics, with musical performances and special crowns substituting standard medals.

The 23-times tennis major winner Serena Williams, who is wed to Athlos founder Alexis O., was present to award the winners with their tiaras.

Previous champions received sixty thousand dollars (£44,603) - one of the largest prize purses in athletics.

The competition also attracted several top athletes, as Kenya's triple Olympic champion and global record breaker Faith K. won the mile, crossing the finish line in 4:17.78.

The US Brittany Brown, the 200m bronze winner from last year's Paris Olympics, won the sprint double.
