Pakistan halted world champions the Proteas' unbeaten run by sealing a 93-run win in an exciting and closely contested opening Test in Lahore.

The Proteas, whose 10-match winning streak in the longest format culminated in victory over the Aussies in the WTC final in June, were bowled out for 183 chasing 277.

Starting the day on 51 for two, they lost century-maker Tony de Zorzi lbw to left-arm quick Afridi to the third ball of the day to push the tightly balanced chase in the home team's favor.

Left-arm spinner Noman Ali, who claimed 10-191 in the game, dismissed Stubbs for 2 and bowled Dewald Brevis, who put up a fight with a rapid 54.

Right-arm spinner Sajid Khan also capitalized on significant spin to terminate opener Rickelton's stay - he lasted 145 balls for 45 - and Afridi returned in the afternoon session to dismiss the tail with a impressive exhibition of reverse swing.

He had Kyle Verreynne lbw for 19 and bowled Subrayen and Kagiso Rabada to seal the victory.

It was both sides' opening game of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle and propels the hosts straight into second place behind table-toppers Australia.

The win was built around contributions of ninety-three by opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq and, importantly, number seven Salman Agha which lifted them to three hundred and seventy-eight.

After that spinners Noman Ali and Sajid utilized helpful home pitches, as they had in their Test series win over England the previous year, to maintain their lead.

The second and final Test begins on October 20.
