Tropical Cyclone Matmo Slammed Southern China Causing Massive Relocations

The powerful storm made landfall on the coastal regions of China on the weekend, shortly after sweeping across the provincial island of Hainan. The severe weather forced the relocation of around 350,000 people, bringing heavy downpours and destructive gusts, especially between Wuchuan in Guangdong and Wenchang in Hainan. Ferry services were halted and air travel disrupted at Haikou Meilan airport.

Typhoon Statistics

Matmo, this year's 21st typhoon of 2025, had sustained wind speeds of 94mph and dumped over 50mm of precipitation in a short period in Chongzou and Qinzhou. The city of the region also experienced high rainfall totals.

The storm triggered China's highest-level red alert, with disturbances in the city, where commercial activities, transport links and roads were closed. In Hong Kong, numerous air services were impacted and 30 cancelled.

Future Projections

As Matmo moves inland towards Cao Bang province in the neighboring country, it is expected to diminish into a less intense system with 55mph winds but will persist to bring substantial precipitation. Vietnam's northern regions could experience significant rainfall on Monday, raising the threat of inundation and landslides. The system is expected to move towards Yunnan region in China, where additional intense rain is likely.

Global Weather Events

At the same time, a hurricane named Priscilla formed off the Pacific shoreline of Mexico on Saturday night, initially as a tropical storm. It prompted a weather alert for south-western regions from Punta San Telmo to another location on the start of the week.

In the morning of the next day, Priscilla was about 491 kilometers from Cabo Corrientes with continuous gusts of 105km/h. It strengthened into a severe cyclone in the night, when sustained winds reached at 75mph.

Though not expected to make landfall, the storm is expected to generate hazardous swells and strong currents as it tracks north-west along the coast towards Baja California Sur. Substantial rain is forecast on the coming day, amounting to a considerable volume in specific Mexican states, with some areas at about 20 centimeters. Colima and western Jalisco could receive 50-100mm.

Elsewhere, a cyclone named Shakhti has formed as the initial post-season storm system of 2025 in the Arabian Sea, prompting an alert from the national weather agency for Maharashtra. On Sunday, Shakhti was 130 miles southeast of a location in Oman with peak wind speeds of 64mph.

The storm, which has moved in a southwestern direction and weakened, is predicted to recurve towards the east into the the sea. Turbulent waters are likely to persist along the Gujarat-North Maharashtra coast and heavy rainfall is anticipated in shoreline areas including specific Indian cities.
